Fast Facts on Rea Vaya's phase 1C

Published 21 July 2014 on
Services to be introduced in phases from 2016/17 will comprise 86.9km of road network, which will include:

  • 242 buses, of which 45 are articulated and 197 standard buses.
  • 17.2km of bi-directional median bus lanes.
  • 45.5km of complementary and feeder routes. This is a public transport priority where feasible and may include a full non-motorised transport upgrade.
  • 24.2km of temporary complementary routes, with no major construction as these will become trunk routes in future.
  • 10 key median stations in the in the middle of the road, where passengers can board and leave the bus.
  • 3 interchanges for public transport integration at Watt Street in Alexandra, and Sandton and Westgate.
  • Park-and-ride facilities into Sandton CBD to reduce the traffic congestion.
  • Two new depots in Alexandra and Ivory Park.

The Rea Vaya Phase 1C infrastructure will also feature 30.5km of extensive walking and cycling paths in Alexandra, improved sidewalks along Louis Botha Avenue, and dedicated cycle and walking paths from Alexandra to Sandton over an iconic bridge.
Additionally, a new integrated transport plan incorporating the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system, Metrobus, and the minibus taxis transit networks will make it easier for commuters to access the public transport system.

Creating jobs

The Phase 1C construction will create an estimated 5700 jobs and for every one job created in construction, another two are created in the cement, iron and steel industries, among others.
There will be 500 permanent jobs in the bus operating company, some of which will replace jobs in the taxi industry, while some 1000 jobs - ambassadors, marshals, cashiers, cleaning and security guards - will be created at stations and interchanges.
The estimated cost to construct and implement Phase 1C is R3-billion all inclusive.
